Microdermabrasion Q & A

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a type of exfoliation that uses tiny crystals to sand away the top layer of your skin. The skin underneath the layer that’s removed is softer, fresher, and younger-looking. Microdermabrasion is a fast and easy way to get a rejuvenated look without surgery or other invasive therapies.

How do you perform microdermabrasion?

Mari Benavente, an aesthetician at Dermatology Center of Northwestern Houston, applies exfoliating crystals directly onto your skin as you relax comfortably.

Over the next 30-60 minutes, she gently sands your face, neck, or both with a handheld electronic device. The microdermabrasion procedure removes the dead cells on the surface of your skin.

You may need a series of treatments to reach your desired level of rejuvenation. Mari may combine your microdermabrasion with a facial, glycolic peel, or Illuminize peel to maximize your results.

How does microdermabrasion improve my skin?

When you sand away the top layer of your skin, you smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Microdermabrasion also evens out coarsely textured skin and decreases pore size.

Mari uses the microdermabrasion technique to reduce brown spots, age spots, melasma, and other hyperpigmentation. She can also improve the appearance of shallow scars, such as acne scars and chicken pox scars.

After your microdermabrasion session, your skin looks brighter and feels softer and smoother. Mari moisturizes your skin with CeraVe®, Cetaphil®, or Aveeno® to help you feel comfortable and protect your radiant new skin.

Your skin may be pink to slightly red and may feel a little bit tight for a day or two after your treatment. You need to keep it moisturized and be sure to stay out of the sun, as your renewed skin is extra sensitive to sunlight. Mari can recommend an effective and safe sunscreen, such as Blue Lizard® or EltaMD®, which you should apply several times each day.

Can I get microdermabrasion if I have dark skin?

The crystals used in microdermabrasion are so small and fine that they won’t damage your skin, no matter its pigmentation. Microdermabrasion is a safe and easy way to get brighter, smoother skin no matter what your skin color or type.
